An overview of moral philosophy for general readers that dispenses with the common notion that moral judgments have special authority. When our moral judgments approve of some behavior, they are true when that behavior is beneficial to humankind. When they seem to have special authority, it is because we feel so strongly about living lives that benefit humankind.

A systematic guide to clarifying and evaluating arguments according to four standards: whether the premises fit the world, the conclusion fits the premises, the argument fits the conversation, and whether it is possible to tell. The first edition was published by McGraw-Hill in 1999.
